Montserratian cuisine is bound to dish up a lot of excitement for you. It is at once, both, traditional and international. The island abounds in marine life, exotic fruits and vegetables and livestock of a high quality, all of which are harnessed to give you a gastronomic experience of a lifetime, distinctive to the last bite. Montserrat Restaurant Guide

If you want to sink your teeth into some authentic Montserratian cuisine then step into one of the numerous homely mom and pop restaurants that dot the island. However, if you prefer the regular fare, you can find British, Italian and French, Indian and Chinese cuisine in the locality of Plymouth. The restaurants of the two hotels in the Centre of Montserrat serve lunch and dinner buffets that stick to the familiar Continental format. This is ideally suited to the taste buds of the less adventurous tourist.

For starters, you could rejuvenate yourself with one of the many fresh fruit juices made from some exotic island fruits like soursop, cashew, West Indian cherries and sorrel. If you prefer something less alien, then ask for fresh juices extracted from papaya, mango and guava.

Then go on to sample the main fare that revolves around meat and ham and various types of seafood. If you are adventurous then try their range of seafood cakes. Lobster cake in a bed of fresh greens and tomato tartar sauce is a strong favourite with the tourists. Or there is the exotic Montserrat jerk shrimp with cinnamon, bananas, rum and cranberry.

For the truly adventurous, there is mahi mahi which is dolphin meat, grilled after marinating in herbs and ground coconut, served with bread. Mountain Chicken is a another typical Montserratian delicacy, made from frog legs. There is no chicken in Mountain Chicken!

Presentation is given great value and most dishes are delectably decorated. A careful balance is maintained while cooking. Even the tiniest details are considered very important, so how the quantity of spices, their proportion and colours and the way they blend to create the flavour of the dish are all essentials that cannot be messed with.

The lush tropical vegetation has thrown up a number of exotic vegetables, cereals, herbs and spices. These are combined in various proportions, with meat and seafood to produce some culinary delights that are subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, but visually appealing, and unique in taste, at all times.

Breezes Restaurant situated in the Tropical Mansion Suites hotel, specializes in Italian food with a Caribbean twist, and also serves an international menu. The hotel's attractive downstairs restaurant and bar is open daily for breakfast, lunch (EC $20 -$30) and dinner (EC$30-$60). There's Happy Hour on Fridays from 7pm -8 pm, and buffet lunch on Sundays. Sometimes special events are held. Licensed bar.

Good Life Restaurant and Night Club

Built on a base of local stonework, on a hillside overlooking Little Bay, and decorated with plants, Good Life makes a lovely setting for special events. Open for groups of ten or more, by reservations only, for lunch (EC$25 or less) and dinner (EC$40 to $60). There is a licensed bar for these events. On club nights (usually Fridays or Saturdays) from around 10pm the younger set takes over, with the latest music and dancing in a disco setting until...

Gourmet Gardens

This restaurant, in a quiet secludd spotm formed part of the old Olveston Estate, and is built in a smilar style. There are two historic buildings close by, together with traces of the island's first airport. You can eat inside or choose the pleasant verandah setting, looking out on the garden. Lunches from EC$ 10 to $20, dinners from EC$30 to $50. Ther's a varied dinner menu of international dishes. Book in advance for dinner if possible

Grand View Bed and Breakfast

In an attractive setting on breezy Baker Hill, lunches and dinners are catered for if oredered two hours in advance (minimum four persons). 'Ponts' Beach View

The 'rustic' appeal of this little restaurant, situated at the very end of Little Bay with a lovely view of the beach and cliffs and framed by a profusion of flowers and tropical plants, makes it a charming spot for a mouth-watering Sunday lunch of barbequed ribs, fish or chicken done on an open grill and served with locally grown organic vegetables and cold drinks.

Their world famous barbeque sauce is made with the finest blend of local ingredients, and you must try their appetizer of freshly made coconut chips! Seating for 50 persons.
